CEO | Family Express
Gus Olympidis is the founder, President and CEO of Family Express in Valparaiso, Ind. Olympidis founded Family Express on Christmas Day in 1975. The chain has grown to 80 stores and 900 employers across the state, with most located in Northwest Indiana and the Indianapolis area. In addition to its stores, Family Express operates a state-of-the-art bakery, distribution center and training center in Valparaiso.
Under Olympidis’s leadership, Family Express is known for its pursuit of vertical integration. The Family Express logistics model consolidates what would otherwise be 25 direct store deliveries by different vendors to each store weekly into one combined daily delivery by Family Express itself. One result of the company’s centralized logistics, according to the company, has been increased foodservice freshness.
The company’s use of a centralized commissary has been a core aspect of its approach to logistics. In 2004, the company announced plans for its first centralized commissary and bakery at a former warehouse site in Valparaiso. The commissary opened in late 2006.
Family Express has received numerous industry awards for its operations including being name Convenience Store Decisions’ 2015 Chain of the Year award, one of the most prestigious awards in retail. In 2019, Olympidis received the National Advisory Group’s (NAG) Lifetime Award for Convenience Retailing for his “indelible mark on the convenience retailing industry.”
